An Importer File for a Chinese EV
Import a Chinese electric car in 2026 by building a file that can survive a customs officer and a clerk, not by collecting brochures. The file starts with a vehicle identification number, a market specification sheet that matches that number, a photograph of the charge inlet, a written destination rule for that body and that propulsion, and a cost column that is allowed to stay empty. This article is a transactional sequence for dealers, importers, and fleet buyers. It is not a promise that any model is available, approved, or priced. AutoCN will help you keep the sequence in order. It will not manufacture a certificate.
Chinese EV is a family of products, not one product. A Europe-spec dual-motor saloon, a China-spec city hatch, and a right-hand-drive nameplate aimed at another region can share a brand and still fail different cells. Write the destination first. Then write the VIN. Then write the sheet. If those three lines disagree, you do not have a deal. You have a photograph.
Step one: freeze the use case before you freeze the badge
A workable import brief has six cells before any brand is allowed on the page. The cells are the longest regular trip, the passengers or payload, the charge hardware you can actually use, the body style you need, the software language you can live with, and the workshop that will see the car after landing. If the longest trip only works when you treat a China CLTC figure as a winter motorway fact, the brief is already too tight. If the only charger on the route is a CCS2 post and the car in the picture is a GB/T inlet, the brief is already a no.
Fleet briefs need two extra cells: how many identical VINs you can accept, and what happens when one car needs a control unit that is region-locked. Individual buyers need a different extra cell: who holds the car while documents move. Do not skip those cells because a landing page looks international. AutoCN’s guides can hold the cells. They cannot fill a destination statute.
What “Chinese EV” must mean on the first page
Write propulsion in the maker’s words: battery electric, plug-in hybrid, or range-extended, plus the test cycle printed on the sheet. Write drive type and motor count. Write pack chemistry only if the sheet names it. Write nothing about stock. A brand thumbnail on the brand centre is a research door. It is not a yard count.
Step two: match VIN, sheet, inlet, and software
Ask for the VIN before you argue about colour. Ask for the complete specification PDF that the seller claims matches that VIN, including the language and the date on the footer. Copy four rows onto the brief: pack energy, labelled range with the cycle name still attached, AC and DC peaks, and inlet family. If any row is missing, the file is not ready for money.
Photograph the inlet with the door open. Common families on Chinese EVs include GB/T on many China-market cars and CCS2 or Type 2 on many Europe-bound cars. Other destinations use other combinations. This page will not publish a conversion recipe. If the destination has no written path for that inlet, stop. Adapters, if legal at all, are a local-engineering file, not a sales sentence.
Software is a third inspection. Maps, voice, phone-as-key, remote climate, and dealer diagnostics can be region-locked even when the metal is sound. Ask who can log into the car after it leaves China, and ask it in writing. An over-the-air promise on a China brochure is not a licence in your country. If the seller cannot name the account region, treat the car as incomplete.
A process table you can paste into the deal folder
| File step | Minimum evidence | Stop the deal if |
|---|---|---|
| Use case | Trip, payload, body, workshop, written in one page | The only brief is a model name |
| Identity | VIN, plate photos, booklet that names this chassis | The booklet is a generic catalogue |
| Energy | Pack kWh, cycle-named range, AC/DC peaks from that sheet | CLTC is offered as if it were WLTP or EPA |
| Charge path | Inlet photograph plus destination charging rule | The inlet family has no written local path |
| Permission | Destination homologation or individual-approval route, dated | The seller says “everyone imports this” |
| Condition | Pre-shipment inspection with battery health if used | The car is called accident-free with no report |
| Move | Freight mode, booking reference, battery-shipping note from the line | Transit time is promised without a booking |
| Money | Dated quotes for vehicle, freight, duty, tax, inspection | A single “landed” number has no annex |
| Aftersales | Warranty region and parts path in writing | Cover ends at the Chinese border and no local operator exists |
Step three: permission, papers, and inspection
Homologation is a destination verb. Some countries have a type-approval path for a named variant. Some allow individual approval. Some restrict left-hand or right-hand drive, lighting, radio, or battery labelling. This article will not list those rules by country because the list would be wrong the week after it is typed. Ask the destination regulator or a licensed local agent for the current route. Put the answer in the file with a date. If the answer is oral, it is not an answer.
Export papers from the China side commonly include a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or sea waybill, and vehicle identity documents. Exact titles change with the trade term and the buyer entity. Ask the exporter to name each document they will hand over, in English and in Chinese if both exist, before you pay a deposit. Do not accept “full customs pack” as a substitute for a list. AutoCN has published document-check language in its information centre. Use it as a checklist mind-set, not as a statutory form.
Inspection sits before the ship, not after the complaint. For a new car, confirm that the VIN on metal, in the cluster, and on the papers is one VIN, that the inlet matches the sheet, and that the odometer and software version are photographed. For a used EV, add a battery state-of-health report, an accident-history attempt, and a flood-and-repair question. This page will not call any car accident-free. If the used file is empty, the transactional file is empty.
Freight is a battery conversation, not a slogan
RoRo and container are different products. A running EV on RoRo is not the same booking as a containerised car with a stated state of charge. Lines and ports publish their own battery rules. Ask the forwarder which rule applies to this VIN and this state of charge. Do not invent a number of days. Lead time starts when a booking exists. Until then the cell stays empty. The guide cluster can remind you to ask. It cannot book a vessel.
Step four: money and aftersales without invented numbers
Landed cost is a sum of dated quotes: vehicle, inland China move if any, export handling, ocean or land freight, insurance, destination duty and tax, inspection, registration, and the first local workshop visit. If any term is missing, the total is missing. Do not copy a Europe retail price, a China guide price, or a social-media “FOB” into that sum. AutoCN’s price guides explain the empty-cell method. They are not an invoice.
Warranty is a region sentence. A China first-owner lifetime line, a Europe year-and-kilometre line, and a verbal “we will look after you” are three different documents. Ask who pays for a traction-pack repair in the operating country, and ask where the diagnostic login lives. Parts follow the same rule. Order from the VIN. The parts pages are a research start, not a warehouse.
Who should not start this file
Do not start if the destination forbids the inlet family and no licensed conversion path exists. Do not start if the only range in the offer is a screenshot without a cycle name. Do not start if the seller refuses a VIN until after a large untraceable payment. Do not start if you need the car to be “already approved everywhere because it is Chinese.” Chinese origin is not a homologation. The file can still help a careful dealer who will wait for papers. It cannot help a buyer who wants a guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to import a Chinese EV?
There is no honest single number. Time is the sum of specification lock, destination permission, inspection, booking, ocean or land transit, and local registration. Anyone who quotes a calendar without a booking and a permission letter is guessing. Leave the cell empty until those two documents exist.
Can I import any BYD or other Chinese EV that I see online?
No. Visibility is not export eligibility and not destination eligibility. The VIN either matches a sheet and a permission route or it does not. A BYD brand page is not a licence.
Do I need to convert GB/T to CCS2?
Only if the destination rule and a licensed workshop say so for that VIN. This page will not sell an adapter. Photograph the inlet and ask the destination first. Many import files die on this cell, which is cheaper than dying at the port.
Is a Chinese EV cheaper once it lands?
It can be, and it can be more expensive, depending on the vehicle quote and the destination charges. This page will not invent a saving. Build the sum from dated lines or do not claim a saving.
Can AutoCN handle the import so I skip the file?
No. AutoCN is a sourcing and information platform. Use contact to keep documents in one thread. It will not skip a regulator, invent stock, or sign an approval.
What is the first document I should refuse to live without?
The VIN plus a specification sheet that names that VIN’s pack, cycle, and inlet. Everything else in this file hangs on those three facts. If they are missing, you are still shopping a picture.
Close the file only when the boring cells close
A 2026 Chinese EV import is ready when the boring cells close: use case, VIN, cycle-named energy, inlet path, destination permission, inspection, booking, quoted costs, and an aftersales sentence that names a region. It fails when any of those cells is a slogan. Keep the go or the no on one page. AutoCN will help you keep that page. It will not drive the car through customs for you.
