On October 30, FAW-Volkswagen celebrated a significant milestone as its 30 millionth vehicle—the FAW Audi A5L Lead Edition—officially rolled off the production line at its Changchun plant and was launched on the same day. The model is offered in a single variant with a price of RMB 309,800, alongside a limited-time preferential price of RMB 289,800. Exclusive pre-order benefits for the A5L Lead Edition were also announced. This milestone makes FAW-Volkswagen the first passenger vehicle manufacturer in China to achieve production and sales of 30 million units, a feat accomplished over 34 years. This further advances the high-level opening-up and high-quality development of China’s automotive industry.

With the new model launch, the automaker has introduced multiple purchase incentives, including a “5 Gifts” policy:

  • A RMB 5,000 deposit that can be offset against the final payment as RMB 9,000;

  • Insurance subsidy worth RMB 3,000;

  • Three standard maintenance services valued at RMB 4,000;

  • A RMB 3,000 trade-in subsidy for Lead Edition buyers;

  • A limited-time offer of a premium exclusive flowing light paint finish worth RMB 3,000.

The FAW Audi A5L Lead Edition is part of the locally produced new-generation Audi A5L series. Built on the all-new PPC petrol vehicle platform, it is positioned as a midsize sedan with dimensions of 4,908 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,458 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,969 mm. Under the hood, it is equipped with the fifth-generation EA888 engine and features HDI Audi dual-motor full-range intelligent hybrid technology. Prior to this, three other variants of the FAW Audi A5L had already been launched, with prices ranging from RMB 239,800 to 289,800.

A key highlight of this model is that it is China’s first petrol vehicle to feature Huawei’s Qiankun advanced driver-assistance system. The A5L Lead Edition is equipped with two symmetrically positioned “Digital Eagle Eye” lidar units on the front bumper, along with six millimeter-wave radars, 13 cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. This enables high-level driving assistance in both urban and highway scenarios. The lidar system adopts a flush-integrated design and includes a temperature-controlled self-cleaning function to ensure sensor clarity under harsh conditions such as rain, snow, or mud. The system supports full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane centering, autonomous ramp navigation, and city/highway pilot assist functions.

As a model of successful Sino-German cooperation, FAW-Volkswagen has expanded over 34 years from a single brand with one model to three major brands—Volkswagen, Audi, and Jetta—offering over 30 petrol and new energy models covering mainstream, premium, and economy segments. In March 2025, China FAW Group and Volkswagen Group signed an agreement outlining future vehicle planning: starting in 2026, the Volkswagen and Jetta brands will introduce 11 new models tailored for the Chinese market, 10 of which will be new energy vehicles. The Jetta brand will launch four new energy models by 2028, with the first model scheduled for release in 2026. Economically, FAW-Volkswagen sells over 1.6 million vehicles annually. Over the past 34 years, it has generated accumulated revenue of over RMB 5.5 trillion and contributed more than RMB 730 billion in taxes.
