A compact electric SUV comparison fails when the buyer mixes two Atto 3 generations with one Kona Electric brochure. Overseas dealers should first name the exact pack, the test cycle, the drive layout, and the charge hardware on the sheet that belongs to the VIN. BYD’s current European press materials for the ATTO 3 EVO describe a 74.8 kWh Blade pack, 800 V architecture, and rear- or all-wheel drive. Name the car on the paper before you compare

Write four lines at the top of the file: maker name, public model name, pack energy, and drive layout. If any line is missing, you are comparing slogans. The Atto 3 name covers a front-drive export car that introduced many European buyers to BYD, and a later EVO family that BYD’s media hub describes as a comprehensive update. Those are different purchase objects. The Kona Electric name covers at least a smaller pack and a 65.4 kWh pack in official market materials. A 48 kWh Kona is not a 65.4 kWh Kona, even when the body looks related.

Record the source date. BYD’s ATTO 3 EVO technical table was published on the brand’s media hub as a European product announcement, with first deliveries described as expected in the spring of that announcement cycle. Hyundai’s Kona Electric figures should come from the national operator’s specification PDF for the model year you are buying, not from a forum conversion. Do not turn a CLTC figure into WLTP, and do not turn a WLTP city figure into a combined figure.

What “the same class” does not prove

Both cars are compact family crossovers with five seats and a CCS-style discussion in many export markets. That is a body class, not a parts class, not a workshop class, and not a charging-class. Towing, roof load, boot volume, and inlet type must be read from the sheet. A shared segment label does not mean a shared service tool or a shared tyre size.

Pack chemistry and architecture

BYD publishes the Atto 3 family with a Blade Battery using lithium iron phosphate cells. The EVO table adds Cell-to-Body installation and a rated capacity of 74.8 kWh. The 2025 Singapore specification sheet for ATTO 3, published on BYD’s own site, lists a 60.5 kWh Blade pack, a permanent-magnet synchronous motor, front-wheel drive, and a WLTP combined range of 420 km. Those two BYD documents must not be averaged. If the exporter cannot say which document matches the VIN, the comparison has not started.

Hyundai’s United Kingdom technical PDF for Kona Electric model year 26.5 lists a 65.4 kWh lithium-ion polymer pack and a 160 kW / 218 PS motor on the long-range trims shown there. Official French product copy also describes a 48 kWh pack with a published WLTP range up to 377 km and a 65 kWh pack with a published WLTP range up to 514 km. Hyundai’s public language on that PDF is “lithium-ion polymer,” not a cathode slogan. Do not write NMC or LFP onto a Kona unless the market sheet prints it. Chemistry guesses do not belong in a purchase annex.

Range, wheels, and charge hardware

WLTP combined range is a laboratory result. On the EVO table, BYD prints 510 km combined for the rear-drive Design and 470 km combined for the all-wheel-drive Excellence, plus higher city figures. On the earlier Singapore Atto 3 sheet, combined WLTP is 420 km and city WLTP is 565 km. Hyundai’s long-range Kona range in public operator materials varies with wheels: French copy cites up to 514 km for a 65 kWh car, while independent spec databases commonly show a lower combined figure on 19-inch wheels. Your job is not to pick a favourite number. Your job is to copy the number that sits next to the wheel size on the sheet you will buy.

Charge hardware is the second column. The EVO table prints 220 kW DC, 11 kW three-phase AC, and a 10–80 percent DC time of 25 minutes under the conditions BYD states. Drive layout, size, and daily use

The EVO announcement is explicit: the update moves the Atto 3 from a solely front-wheel-drive layout to a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and it describes a five-link rear axle in place of the earlier four-link layout. Design is a 230 kW rear motor; Excellence adds a front AC asynchronous motor for a combined 330 kW. The earlier Singapore sheet is a 100 kW front motor, 310 Nm, and a 10.1 second 0–100 km/h figure. Those cars will not feel like each other, and they will not share every underbody part.

Exterior size is the one stable Atto 3 line across the two BYD documents reviewed here: 4,455 mm long, 1,875 mm wide, 1,615 mm tall, 2,720 mm wheelbase. Boot volume is not stable. The Singapore sheet lists 440 / 1,340 litres; the EVO table lists 490 / 1,360 litres and a 101-litre front trunk. Kona Electric dimensions and boot figures must come from the Hyundai PDF for the market, not from an Atto 3 number that “looks close.” If a quotation uses one car’s cargo line on the other car’s body, reject the quotation.

Towing, V2L, and climate equipment

BYD’s EVO table prints a heat pump as standard and V2L at 3.3 kW. The same announcement text cites a 1,500 kg braked towing figure for the EVO. Those lines apply to the EVO table, not to every earlier Atto 3. Hyundai materials for Kona Electric often discuss a heat pump and selectable regenerative braking; copy the lines that appear on the sheet you hold. Do not assume either car may tow in the destination. Towing approval is a local rule plus a rating on that VIN.

Aftersales questions that the spec race hides

The useful comparison for an importer is not “which brochure wins.” It is which car the destination workshop can diagnose, and which consumables have a number. BYD and Hyundai use different tools, different lamp families, and different high-voltage service splits. A city that has learned one brand has not automatically learned the other. Ask for the drive-unit part number, the 12-volt battery type, the tyre size on the car you will receive, and the language of the instrument cluster. Then ask whether a software-region change is even available. A China-market interface and a European-market interface are not the same product.

Warranty language is also market-bound. The EVO announcement cites a six-year vehicle warranty and an eight-year or 250,000 km battery cover with a stated 70 percent state-of-health floor for that European launch story. Hyundai warranty terms sit on the national operator’s page. Do not copy either sentence onto a parallel-export contract. Write “warranty path not verified for this VIN” until the exporter shows the document that will travel with the car.

How to close the comparison without a fake winner

Choose the duty cycle first. A depot that has 400 V chargers and mixed drivers may value a car whose peak DC rate is modest but documented. A buyer who needs the later Atto 3 EVO’s published 220 kW class must prove that the VIN is an EVO and that the destination chargers can use that peak. A buyer who needs Hyundai’s established retail network in one country is making a service argument, not a kilowatt argument. None of those choices is a universal ranking.

Put the three numbers in three rows with their cycles and dates. The longest printed number is not a promise of highway range in heat or cold.

Can I treat both cars as LFP versus NMC?

No. BYD publishes Blade LFP on the Atto 3 family. Hyundai’s UK PDF language is lithium-ion polymer. Unless the Kona sheet names a cathode family, do not assign one. A wrong chemistry line will mislead a residual-value discussion and a fire-response file.

Does all-wheel drive on the EVO replace winter tyres?
